Page Spreads

Spreads are pages joined together so that objects can be bled across the pages. Page spreads are often used for folding brochures, foldout sections, or magazine layouts in which pictures overlap two pages. There is no limit to the number of pages in a spread, other than the maximum page size can not be exceeded by the sum of the individual page sizes.

Spreads may be horizontal or vertical. Horizontal spreads are made of pages joined on their sides. Vertical spreads are made up of pages joined at the top and bottom.

You should not confuse page spreads with viewing double-sided pages as facing pages. The ''Facing Pages'' option of master pages' displays double-sided pages side-by-side. Spreads and facing pages offer similar functionality, with the following exceptions:

If the master pages in the spread are double-sided, the leftmost page in the spread will be based on the left side of the master page. The rightmost page will be based on the right side of the master page and all the inside pages will be based on the center master page side. If double-sided master pages are used in a vertical spread, the top page will use the left master page side and the bottom will use the right.

You can mix single and double-sided pages in a spread, and pages of different sizes. PageStream will join them together the best way possible.

To add a page to a page spread: Choose ''Show Page Palette'' from the ''Window'' menu. The ''Page'' palette will appear. Drag the ''New Page'' icon or an existing page icon onto the side of another page icon. When the page icon is correctly positioned, a vertical bar will appear on the side of (not between) the page icon to which you are adding. Continue adding pages as desired.

The Page Palette

Note that you cannot add pages to the top or bottom of a page that is part of a horizontal spread, nor can you add pages to the left or right of a page that is part of a vertical spread.

To separate a page from a page spread: Choose ''Show Page'' Palette from the ''Window'' menu. The ''Page'' palette will appear. Drag a page icon in a spread to another position. When the page icon is correctly positioned between other icons, a vertical bar will appear between (not on the side of) the page icons. Continue separating pages as desired. When only one page remains in the spread, the spread is dissolved.

SectionSelecting pages within a spread
When you move to a spread, the page number of the first page in the spread is displayed on the ''Go to Page'' button. Even though multiple pages are displayed, PageStream considers the first page to be the active page.

The active page is the default page used by the ''Insert Page'', ''Delete Page'' and ''Move Page'' commands. Its master page is also the default for the ''Edit Master Page'' command. The active page has no other special significance.

To activate a different page in a spread, hold down the Control key and Click the ''Next Page'' and ''Previous Page'' buttons to move within the spread. You can also double-click on the page's icon in the ''Page'' palette to activate it.

NoteWhile you can pull out a single page from a facing pages spread, the pages will be rejoined.
