The edit palette's interface to character spacing does not work as expected.

Place the text cursor without selecting a span of text. Use the arrows to increase or decrease the spacing. The spacing between the separated characters is reduced or increased, but there is no change to the percentage shown in the edit palette. Selecting across the altered spacing simply shows 0% adjustment -- there is no indication that the spacing of text has been altered.

If text is selected, for example a single character rather than simply placing the text cursor as an insertion point, adjusting the spacing applies the change to the selected text and to all following text (in the same paragraph style) instead of simply the selected separation points having their spacing adjusted.

This was an error in that it allowed you to change the pair wise kerning from the edit palette. The control is for text character spacing value, and like any other attribute in the edit palette if you have nothing selected then it allows you to set the attribute to be in effect when you begin typing new text at that location.

To manual adjust the kerning, you need to use the Manual Kerning dialog box (which could become a palette itself I suppose some day) or the keyboard shortcuts.
