One normally expects the summer months to be dull and boring. Too hot to train, few if any puppies born, nothing but dreaming of fall training. If somehow you have been living in a vacuum you might have missed it all! In a nut shell, Doug Willett has formed a new breed registry with the Continental Kennel Club ("www.ckcusa.com", not to be confused with the Canadian Kennel Club) called the Seppala Siberian Sleddog and the parent club the International Seppala Siberian Sleddog Club (ISSSC). The stated purpose is to bring Seppala owners closer together, promote the Seppala Siberian, and represent the interest of the Seppala Siberian Sleddog with an organization who registers dogs at a fair price. Of course that is my summary, and may not represent the total thought process behind this! Luckily, one of the end products of the ISSSC will be a newsletter. So the question is, where does the Seppala News go from here? First, read this newsletter, attend the seminar at Dougs, and explore the contents of the ISSSC web site at "www.seppalasiberiansleddog.com" and the Seppala News web site at "www.grasshopperllc.com/seppnews". Ask questions directly to the powers that be, or ask on the Seppala News mailing list where we have had some pretty deep discussions about this. After you, the reader, have decided where you are going with your dogs, drop us a note and let us know what your directions are going to be, and more to the point, where our directions should be. After all, I dont think you paid to listen to my lone voice in the vast arctic wasteland! ] Happy Trails! (2) Initial registration into the SSS-bloodline category will proceed by submitting the regular "CKC-registration" application, a three-generation pedigree (applicant dog plus 3 additional generations) and the appropriate fee to a designated representative of the breed club (Seppala Siberian Sleddog Club) or the "CKC," who will forward the pedigree to the breed club representative. The applicant dog must be a purebred Siberian Husky (SH). The breed club representative will determine the Seppala content of the dog. The "CKC" will issue a registration based upon the following criteria: ( a ) SSS-category, if, and only if, Seppala content is equal to or greater than 93 %. ( b ) Misc.-SSS-SH category, if, and only if, equal to or more than 50 % Seppala content and less than 93 % Seppala content. ( c ) S H category or reject for all other cases. In cases ( a ) and ( b ) the registration will contain the Seppala content number to the nearest 1 %. In these two cases the dogs listed in the applicant-dog's three generation pedigree will be entered in the CKC memory banks to be used to generate pedigrees for descendants. Initial registration will cease January 1, 2004. (3) Starting January 1, 2004 Registration in the Seppala Siberian Sleddog Class will occur provided the applicant dog has sire and dam already registered in the Seppala Siberian Sleddog Class. Registration in the Seppala Siberian Sleddog Class can occur for a dog with one parent registered in the Seppala Siberian Class and the other in a Miscellaneous Class provided the applicant has Seppala Content > 93% and fits the Standard of the Breed. Fulfilling the Standard of the Breed shall include, but not be limited to, satisfying the following requirements: Weight: males 35-60 pounds, females 30-55 pounds; Height: males 20-24 inches, females 19-23 inches Coat: adequate for survival in a harsh artic environment Attitude: a willingness and strong desire to pull when in harness Personality: friendly, gentle and with a strong desire to please. Seppala content will be determined by averaging the Seppala content of the sire and dam. The Seppala content is the number printed on the dog's registration immediately following the name. If the sire or dam has no Seppala content number stated on its registration or is an unregistered dog, then it will be assigned a Seppala content of zero. 5 Arial BoldSeppala News in your email in basket!Times New Roman5 We want to remind everyone of the elist at seppalanews@yahoogroups.com. Height should range from 20 to 24 inches in males and 19 to 23 inches in females. Weight should be in proportion to height ranging from 35 to 60 pounds in males and 30 to 55 pounds in females. Extreme size in either direction is not desired. Length of body from point of shoulder to the ischium should be from 6 to 18 percent greater than the height at the shoulder, 12 percent being the ideal. Legs must not appear short nor bone heavy. The hindquarters should convey an impression of substance and muscle mass equal to the front, which should not be overly broad of brisket nor coarse in bone structure. The chest should be narrow to moderate in width in the front and set back well into the abdomen. A deep chest is very important. The neck should be arched and long. Front and rear angulations must be balanced and well defined, with stifles well-bent, shoulders and upper arms well laid back. The front legs should be set well under the body with the angles the shoulder blade and upper arm make the vertical passing through the point of the shoulder greater than 45 degrees. A straight front is a major fault. The loins should be well-muscled though markedly constricted in width from the thorax, and should show a slight arch. The croup is rounded, sloping downward from the hip bone to tail set giving the impression of a wheel segment. The rear stifle should have a pronounced bend producing a moderate to well angulated rear and should be moderate to long in length. It is very important that the stifle and hock be extremely flexible. This decides how well the dog uses his rear angulations. Little effort should be required to straighten out the rear leg at the point of the hock or above. Stiffness in the rear is a major fault. Finally, the rear stance should be sturdy and sound, neither to narrow or too wide. Although the dog may be compact, he must never be cobby or very short coupled. A rather long back is characteristic of the strain and allows for a effortless working lope if coupled with a well angulated front end a moderately angulated, very flexible rear end. The tail should come out horizontally, and never be a snap tail, a ring tail or come out to the side. When pulling, the tail is held low and stiff. A good, thick, large, firm, flexible foot with well-cushioned pads is important. Splayed out, flat, soft, as well as tiny "cat feet" are not desirable. Black or lemon colored pads are preferable, but all colors are acceptable. All visual facial skin surfaces ought to be as darkly pigmented as possible. It is preferable that nose, lips and eye rims be black, but is not a fault, especially on white coated dogs, if they are not. Coat color can be anything and in any pattern. Nonsymmetrical markings, indicative of lack of cosmetic inbreeding, are preferable. The head should be finely chiseled, of moderate size with respect to the body, and never in any way coarse. Both fox like and wolf like appearing heads are acceptable. The ears are tall, strongly erect, and set close together on top of the skull with inner edges parallel when at attention; they should be moderately rounded at the tips rather than sharply pointed. Although not desired, there should be no penalty for floppy ears that do not become erect. There should be some "stop" but not to an exaggerated degree and there should be no penalty for lack of "stop". Bite may be scissors or level but a scissors bite should be preferred. The typical Seppala coat is a "plush" coat in which the undercoat is practically as long as the guard hair, giving a full-furred, smooth and dense appearance. The coat is quite thick and soft. Its length may vary but the soft texture and smooth outline should remain the same whatever the length. The long dense "wooly" coat is not desirable but is not considered a fault. Long, flat, possibly wavy coats are a fault, and short coats with no or little undercoat are an extreme fault. His demeanor is active, merry and often quite inquisitive, friendly, though sometimes showing reserve with strangers. He is always gentle and tractable; no tendency towards viciousness should ever be tolerated. He has a positive attitude towards his work of pulling in harness and a strong desire to please, which means that he should be introduced to teamwork and light pulling in his first year. "Attitude" should be the top priority in breeding, because once lost, it is almost impossible to regain. A Seppala Siberian Sleddog works because he wants to, but still must be amenable to serious training and discipline and not quarrelsome with other dogs. In motion, his gate is exceedingly smooth and effortless but showing great drive and power under load. The Seppala gait is unspoiled and excellent. A perfectly smooth and level trot should occur and no bounce or choppiness of gate tolerated. The limbs should travel in straight forward paths, the head should be held low, the tail should be down, and at a fast trot or more, the dog should single-track. Good reach and strong rear drive are essential as is full coordination of fore and hind quarters in action. When moving and pulling at rapid pace and viewed from the side, he should display a long front end reach (stride), without undue upward movement of the head, and a well extended powerful rear movement. In no way should his front appear to be pulling his rear. Viewed from the rear he should single track and show a powerful rear end thrust. There should be absolutely no distortions of movement or body to accommodate the front and rear legs coming together under the body. Nor should there be any interference between the front and rear legs at this time. He should never in any way appear clumsy. Movement is the second most important trait in breeding. The Seppala Siberian Sleddog is a wholly natural variety of dog, a rugged dog, well equipped for survival in a cold harsh environment. He is naturally hardy, highly efficient in the use of food, and physically sound. Whelping should be natural and puppy mortality practically nil. The breeder should strive to preserve what nature has so well developed. Obviously the SSS suggests it will fix the problems that ail Seppala Siberian Husky. So lets take a quick look at the promises of this registry: Times New Roman BoldThe AKC is too expensive!Times New Roman The Continental Kennel Club (ConKC) charges a flat $10 per dog to be registered with no late fees or litter registration fees. As you know, the AKC charges $25 per litter + $17 per dog, and if you are late with registration you can add as much as $60 to the litter or dog registration. Times New Roman BoldThe AKC, and the parent club of the Siberian Husky (the SHCA), serves only to create couch potatoes!Times New Roman The majority of Siberian Huskies are show or companion dogs, and the emphasis of the AKC and the parent club is the judging of the dogs in a show ring by judges unfamiliar with working dogs, with no working tests performed. In the ConKC, only working dogs will be registered and titles will be for performance and not conformation. Times New Roman BoldThe AKC doesnt support our sport!Times New Roman The ConKC will create a SSS crown with a purse, and let us set our own rules! Times New Roman BoldThe AKC has a closed stud book that should be open!Times New Roman The ConKC will allow outside blood to be bred into the SSS as approved by the elected board of the ISSSC. This can be any dog that meets the breeds standard and has at least 93% of its parentage from the foundation Seppala dogs. Sounds good so far, right? A little positive spin and even I am ready to jump ship. So lets take a deeper look. Is the ship sinking? Times New Roman BoldThe registration fees are outrageous?Times New Roman Cant argue that the AKC costs a lot for what it delivers. In fact, even the ConKC is overcharging us at $10 a dog. Not nearly the same gouge as the AKC, but still it is just a piece of paper with information we already know. But lets take a look at it in perspective. On average, my dogs would cost $12 more to register with the AKC than the ConKC (one time fee). Compare that to the costs to house, feed and care for that dog, plus the costs to train and race. An average of $200 a year per dog would be a low ball figure for me. Consider it the price to play in the pure bred race scene if you must. If you are willing to give up the ISDRA pure breed awards, local SHCA purses, SHCA and ISHC recognition and titles, and an international market for AKC registered sled dogs, then why save yourself just the $12, and save the whole $22? Seriously, a web site, some programming time, and a breed club can be doleing out pretty papers for breeders at little or no cost. From what I have heard from others about the ConKC, I would guess your own backyard registry wouldnt be a bad choice as far as image goes. Times New Roman BoldWhat do shows have to do with working dogs?Times New Roman Well, the AKC registers our dogs. Exactly what it is supposed to do. Of course the fees are high, but we covered that. Yes, there are thousands more show and pet Siberian Huskies out there. So what? They are not going away. Give up on the breed and you are handing the keys over to those left behind. Call the racing dogs something else and you loose the opportunity to educate. Times New Roman BoldHow about titles?Times New Roman The SHCA already has a decent sled dog title program. It doesnt recognize team efforts, but individual dogs on a team as you would expect from a dog club. The proposed SSS crown is a race within a race. If your team crosses the finish line in twice the time as the winning team, but you beat all the other SSS drivers, you still get first place points. If it is a two day race, you get twice as many points. However, long one day mid-distance race winners only get half as many points as a two day glorified sprint race. Even if all of this was fixed, what does this have to do with the breed registry? Lets not forget very few mushers actually persue the existing title programs, and any group can create a credible title. Most in the competitive sprint world would like to win an ISDRA title, and ISDRA has no breed affiliation. Ive heard about all the supposed money that the ConKC is going to put into the Crown. What, they print money there also? The ConKC is a for-profit organization just like the AKC. They will only support a purse as a return on investment dictates. The return? SSS crown entry fees and/or SSS registration fees. Minus a profit. Want to know how you stack up to Siberian Husky drivers? Look elsewhere, this is a private party! Times New Roman BoldWe need open stud books?Times New Roman Times New Roman If there is a pervasive genetic shortcoming in the Siberian Husky, than someone please sound the alarm. Im not saying that problems dont crop up from time to time in lines (be it Siberians, or Alaskans), but there has to be an identified problem before we start trying to fix it. Then we would be crossing to dogs that we know do not carry this problem. One might argue that the racing Siberian Husky (including the Seppala), does not compete as well as it could with the Alaskan teams in races. If that might compel you too cross-breed to Alaskans, first ask yourself what that proves about your dogs and about Alaskans. Times New Roman BoldDij` vuTimes New Roman Of course, the thing I find the most confusing is how similar this sounds to J.J. Braggs project in Canada. What I dont understand is how Braggs Seppala Siberian Sleddog project was considered hogwash by the most competitive Seppala drivers, and yet Dougs Seppala Siberian Sleddog project is heaven sent. (Forgive me calling it Dougs, but for a lack of a better distinction I think the reader will understand.) It must not be because of Braggs lack of race-tested performance-based breeding, since he is part of the more than 120 years of breeding racing Siberians at the coming Seppala Siberian Sleddog symposium. Maybe just because Doug is in charge now. I certainly admire him, his dogs, and his race record. Sadly however, one day Doug will not be with us. When that time comes, will the new leaders of the SSS command the same respect and carry the same intuition and skill that has been bestowed upon Doug? Will the power of the SSS Board be wielded with political fairness and honesty? Times New Roman BoldWhere do you go from here?Times New Roman So the first question you have to ask yourself is, why do I have registered Siberian Huskies? and more to the point why do I have registered Seppala Siberian Huskies? Perhaps you like to root for the underdog, always striving for that miracle win. Or you love the history of the breed. Or the beautiful build. Or those crafty minds that are always thinking. Or the heart that gives and gives. The next question you have to ask yourself is, why dont I have Alaskans? and why do I register these dogs? If you can answer these questions honestly, you should have your answer to the question, should I register and breed AKC registerable Seppala Siberian Huskies or ConKC Seppala Siberian Sleddogs? In my opinion, if we want to improve the Siberian Husky in general, and the Seppala in specific, we should stick together and work to do just that. Improve the Western Crown and make it available for all Siberian racers to compete. Continue to judge our abilities against the winning teams, no matter what the breed. Educate the public, and the show world. Show them what these dogs were bred to do! How about the old SEPP evaluations? Lets work together to identify the best working Siberian Huskies and give others the chance to integrate these genes without regard to politics. Diversity amongst the kennel owners is as important to our dogs, as it is in our dogs gene pool. 5 Arial BoldKennel Tip 5by Marna KazmaierTimes New Roman5 For a simple, cheap and easy way to pick up after your dog while out walking... Take a 35-millimeter film canister and drill a whole in the top at the edge and one in the top of the canister near the top. Put a tie through both of those and through the handle of a leash. Fill the canister with cheap baggies (but not too cheap). You now have a poop bag with you whenever you use this leash (if you remember to refill it).] ArialFORM ARTIARTI 6FORMCTXTVERSCTXTArial !"#$%234 hP@H567`8`9:;@<@ACDH`IJKPPNOVWXYAmerican[@\]abd2ghf$"Blackope][ijqkxlmnghf$"Blackopr5 stu stu stu stu~OAmerican Arial Bold0John & Kari CoyneArial Scotland, UK July 1998 From l-r, front to back: Powder, Helen Ruby, Spring Chugach, Queen Lapushka Pooka, Shango Sos, Beowullf FORMARTIARTI 6FORMjCTXTVERSCTXTNArial !"#$%234 hP@H567`8`9:;@<@ACDH`IJKPPNOVWXYAmerican[@\]abd2ghf$"Blackope][ijqkxlmnghf$"Blackopr5 stu stu stu stu~OAmerican50 Arial BoldHannu Rauhamaa with Goosak IndurainArial 5FORMARTIARTI 6FORMvCTXTVERSCTXTZArial !"#$%234 hP@H567`8`9:;@<@ACDH`IJKPPNOVWXYAmerican[@\]abd2ghf$"Blackope][ijqkxlmnghf$"Blackopr5 stu stu stu stu~OAmerican50 Arial BoldMaj-Lis Rauhamaa with Goosak Guru & Yakoot AlvaArial 5FORMARTIARTI 6FORMCTXTVERSCTXTyArial !"#$%234 hP@H567`8`9:;@<@ACDH`IJKPPNOVWXYAmerican[@\]abd2ghf$"Blackope][ijqkxlmnghf$"Blackopr5 stu stu stu stu~OAmerican5 Arial Bold0]PThe Seppala Siberian Husky in the UK 5by Kari Coyne5 Times New Roman5In 1987 the first pure Seppalas were imported into the U.K. spending six months in quarantine. They were Queen of Sepp-Alta, Rachael of Sepp-Alta, and Nutok of Sepp-Alta. Queen and Rachael were imported by us from Doug Willett as foundation bitches for the very first U.K. Seppala Siberian Husky kennel. Rachael came to us in whelp having been bred to Hercules of Sepp-Alta. Nutok had been brought in from Germany by Peter Carroll simply as a racing dog, though he was widely used at stud by every racer wanting Seppala genes to enhance their lines. Sadly most of these offspring, once half Seppala, dwindled down to quarter seppala and so on until the genetic influence was watered out of existence. With our kennel, Chukchi, we strove to maintain the purity of the strain and therefore refused most inquires for stud purposes except the occasional part Seppala still around. But no one made any further efforts to breed pure Seppala Siberian Huskies themseleves. The interest was just not there, plus the lengthy and expensive quarantine added to the inaction. Rachael had a litter of eight puppies, five of which remained with us, three males went to trusted friends we hoped would establish Seppala kennels with further imports. This sadly never happened. In 1989 we were delighted when two of our good friends, the Martin's, decided to import Yank of Sepp-Alta and Alyosha of Sepp-alta. Later, in 1993, the Sunman's joined our cause and imported Sepp-Lok's Elise in whelp to Cat of Sepp-Alta. At last we had the basis of building on the Seppala Siberian Husky gene pool in the U.K.! But much to our collective surprise, the British were not coming... No path was beaten to our doors begging for puppies. Over the years enquires were few enough to keep us from breeding and promoting the Seppala Siberian Husky. This, despite their successes at the major races (We had one of the best U.K. teams from 1988 to 1996). As races gradually became shorter (sprints under 5 miles) due to lack of snow and warm weather, we withdrew from the racing scene. These mini sprints on dirt did not appeal to us or our dogs. While Seppalas can perform well in short sprints, if so trained, they are basically tough minded, hard working, endurance dogs. It does not suit them to kill themselves over 2 or 3 miles. People thinking of importing Seppala Siberian Huskies for speed races are deluding themselves if they are performing against Zeros, hounds or pointers. Fifteen years have now passed. No further Seppalas have come into Britain until this year, 2002, where Seppalas have suddenly been enjoying a resurgence of popularity. Sadly renewed interest in building the Seppala gene pool has come late to our kennel. Nutok, Rachael, Queen, Yank and Alyosha and many of their pure offspring are all dead. The pure Seppala descendants still alive are either too old to breed from, in the case of bitches, or in the case of male have no bitches to breed to! This year it has been announced that the U.K.'s dastardly quarantine restrictions will finally be lifted for the U.S. and Canada. A ray of hope perhaps? When she taught him to do something he learned real quick, He did everything from leading a team to chasing a stick. She has other sibes but in stone it is set, that Blue is that once in a lifetime pet. Hes gone now and years have gone by, Its time for me to give sibes a training try. Now I have a sibe pup he looks nothing like Blue, But I hope that I can train him the way she did too. Hes learning obedience, agility, to pull and some tricks, He can carry a pack, pull a log and loves to give licks. His name is Traveler and a traveler he is When it comes to learning, this boy is a whiz. I am very proud to have all my dogs and this dream puppy too, Who lives on in the memory of my good friend and Blue. Dedicated to my good friend Wendy Lauber who was the first person to SHOW me that Siberian Huskies CAN do it all and do it well. I sure miss training/trail time with her, and we both miss her main dog Blue.
