When setting up landscape pages they use left and right for inner and outer margins rather than top and bottom. Yeah, this has always been this way, but its annoying. What I inevitably end up doing is rotating the objects and using portrait because I'm printing front and back.

The alternative would be to have separate left and right master pages, but that just seems at odds with the layout principle as each master page has left/center/right sides.

I think the proper solution would be to have a binding option to go with the double sided. A simple long/short edge and assuming left or top as appropriate would work most of the time, but to allow flexibility I would think a fuller specification would be warranted.

I'm putting some thought into this (and it turns out it is more complicated than I can construct over my lunch break... ;^)

Okay,

In general a document would be expected to go complete to "a" printer, but I don't like imposing artificial rules and I don't see how there's anything wrong with someone throwing in a "last chapter" to an 8.5x11 document that is an advertising poster. Or whatever.

But too many up front options lead to unnecessary complexity so I was thinking that having the document have a property of "binding edge" that can be overridden through master pages might be useful. It might be sufficient to simply have it be completely controlled by master pages with the document/original master page serving as the default setting when creating new master pages.

Expressing binding as a drop-down choice of left (base default), top, right and bottom should serve. That would be relative to the odd-numbered page in normal page spreads.

This way a book can be done with landscape pages which have a concept of binding edge to allow proper inner/outer margins. Or a short-edge flip calendar could be done with appropriate inner/outer margins.

This could then be combined (please?) with the print output so that those with duplexing printers get correct output straight from PgS (currently if I want something other than long-edge flip I have to print to file, convert to PDF and *then* print).
