I have a simple document with one image. It prints correctly and quickly to an HP LJ4p (bitmap) printer. I just added an HP LJ4mv (postscript) printer to my system. I can print to it from any other program without error. When printing from PGS, both 5.0.4.46 and 5.0.2.10, the print queue builds to 98.1mb, of which 97.0mb is transmitted. It continues to sit until eventually it times out.

I printed to a file for comparison, and the file size was only 4.3mb. I tried printing to Acrobat Distiller, and it gave me this error:

%%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
%%[ Error: limitcheck; OffendingCommand: image ]%%

Stack:
-dict-

%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

I tried printing to the printer with 'Print Pictures' unchecked, but it just timed out the same way. I tried another document, and it gave me the same problem.

I can save the document as a PDF using PGS, and it opens and prints just fine from Acrobat. This is ok for a workaround, but I really need to get direct to printer postscript printing working.

I believe the problem is font related. When I review the PDF file in Acrobat, I noticed most of the fonts were Type 1, and not TrueType. I filtered out most of my fonts by using the new 'favorites' font list, and now all the fonts in the PDF are TTF. I'm still testing whether that fixed the printing delay problem.

I've tried some more experimentation with this lately. I can get around the large print file size sometimes by saving the file as a PDF, then printing from Acrobat. The 98mb from PGS becomes a 800k file from Acrobat, and prints quickly. But, some documents will still report the PS error when printed from Acrobat.

I've even tried printing to Distiller from PGS, but that will still fail on those documents.

Based on some older support posts, I decided to try 4.1.5.8, and found it printed the documents very quickly. So to confirm what others have said, something broke in Postscript printing in v5.x.x.x. Looks like I'll be using 4.1.5.8 to print my documents until this gets fixed.
